Cumberland Valley Equine ServiceServices
General medicine and surgery for your horses can be provided at your barn or at CVES. Sometimes extended medical care or the administration of certain medications may make a stay at CVES for your horse desirable to minimize travel charges and maximize your peace of mind. Many surgeries such as laceration repair, biopsy, and tumor removal, as well as selected reproductive procedures can be performed in a standing, sedated horse with acute aftercare provided on site for haul-in clients.
Preventive medicine programs include regular physical examination and consultation about sensible vaccination, deworming, nutrition, fitness and lameness avoidance, and dental maintenance.
Vaccination programs are designed on an individual basis. We strive to offer objective information so that you can decide what level of infectious disease protection you will provide for your horse. There are many vaccines available and some are less effective than others at providing protective immunity. CVES strives to stay abreast of constantly evolving vaccine technology to help us prevent infectious disease.
Equine dentistry has been progressing furiously the last few years. Better equipment and understanding of the equine mouth have helped veterinarians provide a much needed improvement in dental service delivery. CVES utilizes motorized equipment as well as traditional hand tools in this function. Sedation and radiology (X-rays) are used as needed to provide more comfort and better diagnosis for your horses dental needs.
Sports Medicine encompasses lameness detection, diagnosis and treatment as well as addressing other possible causes of reduced or poor performance. Comprehensive lameness examination accompanied by appropriate imaging or biochemical testing, as well as respiratory tract examination often uncovers the problem. Radiology, ultrasonography and endoscopy may be employed for this evaluation. Occasionally referral is necessary for more elaborate radioactive bone scanning techniques.
Reproductive Services include artificial insemination techniques as well as stallion collection and shipping of chilled fresh semen. Reproductive tracking of the broodmare can be difficult, especially when trying to breed artificially or with a foal by her side. Accuracy in timing the breeding is essential. CVES offers limited mare boarding for repeat reproductive examination to reduce travel costs and improve accuracy in heat detection. Accurate heat detection is the key to a successful breeding season.
Stallion collection and shipping services are available, including basic fertility evaluation. There can be a considerable amount of time and money invested in a quality shipped semen program. Reputations come from results, and results are dependent on what arrives at the broodmare end. A consultation is recommended before the season starts and semen shipments are anticipated.
New Imaging Technologies: Portable radiology (X-ray) equipment is always available. is now available--this means you can see the results at the time of your horse's exam!!! Fiberoptic endoscopy of the upper airway and trachea is available by appointment, as well as digital ultrasonography (examples of sonograms) for the early detection of pregnancy, tendon evaluation, and diagnostic use in other soft tissues.
